The Miraculous Mandarin, op. 19
1. Allegro (Introduction): a bustling city street
2. The curtain rises on a shabby room in the slums, where three penniless tramps force a girl to lure in perspective victims from the street
3. First decoy game

4. The shabby old rake enters and makes comic gestures of love to the girl until the tramps throw him out
5. Second decoy game
6. The shy young man appears in the door, and the girl dances - at first hestitantly, then faster and makes comic gestures of love to the girl until the tramps throw him out

7. Third decoy game
8. Horrified, they see a weird figure in the street, and the tramps hide as they hear him coming up the stairs
9. The Mandarin enters and stands immobile in the doorway; the girl, terrified, flees to the other end of the room

10. General consternation. The girl overcomes her repugnance and entices slowly the Mandarin to come closer and finally to sit in the chair
11. At last she overcomes her reluctance and begins a hesitant dance, which gradually enlivens to a pitch of erotic frenzy, as the Mandarin stares at her impassively
12. The girl sinks down to embrace him; he begins to tremble in feverish excitement
13. She flees from him, and he chases her more and more wildly
14. The Mandarin catches the girl, and they fight
15. The tramps leap out, tear the Mandarin away from the girl, and seize his jewellery and money
16. "We must kill him, stifle him under the pillows on the bed," the tramps decide
17. They think he is dead, but suddenly the Mandarin's head appears between the pillows and he looks longingly at the girl; the four shudder and stand aghast
18. At last the three tramps master their horror. They drag the Mandarin out and grip him firmly while one stabs him three times with a rusty sword
19. Suddenly he draws himself up and leaps at the girl. The tramps stop him and hold him fast again. While they hold him, the Mandarin looks longingly at the girl
20. They drag the resisting Mandarin to the centre of the room and hang him on the lamp hook
21. The body of the Mandarin begins to glow with a greenish blue light. His eyes remain fixed on the girl
22. At her insistence, the tramps take him down. The Mandarin falls on the floor and at once leaps at the girl. She resists no longer, and they embrace
23. The Mandarin's longing is now stilled, his wounds begin to bleed, and he dies after a short struggle
